Solar Water-Heater Tank Replacement

A leaking or failed solar storage tank can disable an otherwise serviceable solar water-heating system. Sundial evaluates the tank, collectors, circulation equipment, controls, plumbing and backup heating before recommending the scope.

When compatible collectors and related components remain serviceable, replacing the tank may preserve more of the existing system. When other equipment is deteriorated or incompatible, Sundial explains the additional work instead of assuming every project needs complete replacement.

If your existing equipment is leaking or no longer dependable, Sundial can determine whether you need a solar water heater tank replacement, a targeted repair or complete solar water-heating system replacement.

Signs Your Solar Storage Tank Needs Professional Evaluation

  • Water collecting around the tank or visible tank corrosion
  • Inconsistent hot water or poor recovery
  • Repeated heating-element or thermostat problems
  • A tank that has reached the end of its practical service life
  • Circulation or control problems affecting system performance

What Sundial Evaluates Before Replacing a Tank

Tank condition and symptoms

Leaks, corrosion, failed heating elements, thermostat problems, poor recovery and visible deterioration.

Existing collector compatibility

Whether the rooftop collectors and circulation design remain compatible, serviceable and appropriate to retain.

Pumps, controls and plumbing

The condition of pumps, controllers, sensors, valves, fittings, heat exchangers and related components.

Replacement scope

Access, tank capacity, backup heating, removal of the failed tank, installation needs and system testing.

Solar Water-Heater Repairs Beyond the Tank

A tank leak is only one possible failure. Sundial diagnoses the complete solar hot-water system and repairs serviceable equipment when its construction and condition make repair appropriate.

Collector disassembly and copper repair

Many contractors recommend replacing a glazed collector whenever its internal copper tubing fails. When the collector’s construction and overall condition allow, Sundial can carefully disassemble it, access the damaged copper, braze the repair using an oxy-acetylene torch and an appropriate silver-bearing brazing alloy, reassemble it and test the work as appropriate.

Repair is not right for every collector. Extensive corrosion, widespread damage, deteriorated components, unavailable parts or an uneconomical repair may make replacement the better recommendation.

Pumps, controllers and sensors

Sundial troubleshoots circulation failures, controller problems, sensor faults and systems relying too heavily on backup electric heat.

Joints, valves and solar plumbing

Sundial evaluates leaking copper joints, fittings, isolation and check valves, air vents and related solar-loop components.

Systems Installed by Other Companies

Sundial services qualifying solar water-heating systems regardless of the original installer, subject to equipment condition, safe access and parts availability. We can evaluate systems left without support when the original solar company is unavailable.

Cash and Financing Options

Sundial offers cash-purchase and financing options for qualifying tank-replacement and solar water-heating projects. Availability, eligibility and terms vary by project.

Solar Water-Heater Repair FAQs

Do you replace leaking solar water-heater tanks?

Yes. Sundial evaluates the leak, tank, connected plumbing and controls, backup heating and the rest of the system before recommending the appropriate replacement scope.

Can you replace only the tank and keep my existing collectors?

Often, but not always. Compatible collectors and other components may remain in service when their condition and the replacement design allow.

How much does solar water heater tank replacement cost?

A standard solar water-heater tank replacement typically starts at $1,900 and includes the replacement tank, standard labor and standard fittings. Pumps, valves, controllers, sensors, extensive plumbing changes, access complications, permits and other system repairs are not included in the starting price. Sundial evaluates the existing system and provides a project-specific estimate before work begins.

Do I need a new tank or complete solar water-heating system replacement?

Not every failed tank requires replacing the entire system. Sundial evaluates the storage tank, collectors, pumps, controls, valves and solar-loop plumbing to determine whether tank replacement, a targeted repair or complete system replacement is the appropriate scope.

Do you repair systems installed by another company?

Yes, subject to equipment condition, parts availability and whether a safe, practical repair is possible.

Do you replace pumps, controllers, sensors and valves?

Yes. Sundial services these components where appropriate after diagnosing the system.

Do you install completely new solar water-heating systems?

Yes. Visit our Solar Water Heating Installation page for complete new-system design and installation.
